If you are going to install siding vertically on the dormer i guess you would use j channel at the bottom and top and as far as i can see yes you d probably need to notch either the end of the j channel or the corner post where the j channel runs into it to allow water to drain out.

To seal the edge of a siding panel where it has been cut and to secure it to the wall you can use under sill trim.
Expansionwhen the temperature changes vinyl siding expands and contracts.
The way to allow for this expansion is to install the corner post down from the soffit or top of the corner.
When installing the starter strips allow a 1 8 inch space for corner posts and j channels for expansion.
Trim out with wood.
Use two j channels.
Use a standard corner but flatten it out.
This just doesn t look right.
Any help is.
If a corner post is installed tight to the shingles and the j channel dead ends into it any water that runs down the j channel will back up at the post and may find its way into the house.

Hammer the first nail into the nailing slot.
Hold the corner post up a bit and run the j channel beneath it instead.
Place the corner post in position allowing a 1 4 6 4mm gap between the top of the post and the eave or soffit.
Nail in the center of the nailing slots.

Suggestions so far have been.
Position a nail at the top of the upper slot on both sides of the corner post leaving a gap of approximately 1 32 0 8mm between the nail heads and the corner posts.
